For those of us who enjoy tucking into some local delicacies, we’re always in the mood to learn about some of the best food outlets in the local area when moving to a new destination.

However, when you move somewhere permanently, such as the Costa del Sol for example, it’s important that you learn as much as you can about the local restaurants, cafes and bars so that you know where you’ll be eating locally for the foreseeable future.

Here are five places we would recommend any new Costa del Sol resident to visit regularly to get involved in the local community spirit:

  1. The Red Dragon – Torreblanca

It’s always good to know that you have friendly bar owners nearby to speak to every time you visit and even better to know that they’re capable of serving up some delicious traditional food and drink! The Red Dragon Bar is family run and has a friendly team of staff members who are more than capable of making you feel welcome.

It may not look much on the outside but the meals are great and affordable, so it’s an ideal place to stop by for a tasty lunchtime snack. Torreblanca beach is great for families and young children as it’s a long sweeping beach with wide paseo ideal for cycling and just letting the kids run down. There are a number of apartment buildings available for hire in the area and the community is welcoming and friendly, so it’s the ideal place to start!

  1. Santorinis Restaurant – Los Boliches

The Italian/Greek restaurant situated on the beachfront of Los Boliches offers exquisite day or evening time meals that are based on the traditional flavours of both Italy and the Mediterranean. The staff are friendly and welcoming to newcomers and are always happy to see new faces arrive at their restaurant.

As they’re open all day, there’s the option of sitting in for a coffee during the daytime as well as visiting for an outstanding evening meal. An added bonus is the free Wi-Fi that’s available so you can surf the net on your laptop whilst enjoying a cold drink or lunchtime snack.

  1. Sand Piper Restaurant – Los Boliches

This restaurant excels when it comes to evening meals with beautifully home-cooked food on offer and a menu that offers all kinds of traditional recipes inspired by a variety of different types of cuisine.

It’s located on the beachfront and has a team of friendly staff along with a welcoming owner. The properties and apartments that surround the restaurant are very attractive and in high demand, so this has proven to be a restaurant that has acted as a local to many residents.

  1. Calypso Bar – Torreblanca

One of Torreblanca’s most notable bars, Calypso is situated on the beachfront and has a huge veranda where people can sit and enjoy their meal whilst enjoying the warm weather and chatting with fellow residents.

It opens at 12 and stays open until late so its and ideal place to go for an evening meal. The indoor seating is particularly cosy and offers a slightly more upmarket feel to some of the independent bars around town. The bar also provides drinks throughout the evening and acts as a platform for a friendly and good natured community get-together. There is also often live entertainment.

  1. Santiago’s Kitchen

If you’re looking for somewhere communal and friendly for a special occasion, we recommend Santiago’s Kitchen in Alhaurin el Grande. You’ll be welcomed by one of the owners and lead to a comfortable table in a beautifully decorated courtyard area.

With a pleasant atmosphere to experience and some delicious courses to indulge in, it really is one of the Costa del Sol’s finest food outlets. Being slightly inland it also benefits from having a higher proportion of local residents frequent it too than you may have down on the beach side restaurants.

Beautifully presented dishes are just the start as the friendly owners are kind, welcoming and happy to enjoy some heart-warming banter with any new resident.
